With VSCO Cam,the association broughtits heading filtersand modifying collectionto mobile. Whereas Instagram set outtomakeyour mobile photos demeanourgood,VSCO hopestomakethem demeanourreal—whichis arguablythe subsequent stepfor mobile photography right awaythat phone camerasare pointy enough. No longermustwe overcompensatefor bad low-light openingand loud post-processing.

“The judgmentthat thegood printis the singlethathas lotsof texturesor colorsis somethingthatwe longed forto dispel,”says VSCO co-founder Greg Lutze.“The composition, the lighting, andthe theme make the differencearewhat’sinteresting,as againsttoifthere’s 10 layersof filtersand light leaksinit.”There’sno disbeliefthatpopular appslike Afterlightcan begetsome flatteringcool effects, but VSCOis aimingfor something some-more authentic.“They’re receivingthe movie bondsthat photographers still at largeuse, like Kodak Porta, and replicatingits tonesand tone deliverybeautifully,”says Wilkinson.“Whenyouusetheir filtersyoucantellthey outlayedthe timeto compareit accurately, but losingyour image’s energetic operationto mortal editing.”On Instagram, conversely, photosare denseand often oversaturated, makingthe headlines feedquickto bucketandthe photos flashy, but stealingsomeofthe photo’s strange itemand character.
