Whenwegot hands-onwiththe Windows 8.1 preview progressingthis week, itwason the Surface Pro— i.e.,an x86 Personal Computer using full Windows. Until today, though,we hadn’thad the possibilityto trythe programon the device using Windows RT. Well, opportunelyforus, Microsofthas the quarrel fullof creatively updated Surface RT unitsondisplay hereat Build, sowe tookthe event poke around thelittle.Asyou’d expect, Windows RT 8.1hasallthe accoutrementsofthe full Windows version, together withan always-thereStart symbolandnew appslike Food& Drinkand Health& Fitness. What’s arrangeofinterestingisthatyoucan foottothe desktop hereas well, justasyouwouldon Windows 8.1. (Wesay“interesting”because, well, how urgentlydoyou needthe desktopon RT anyway?)The desktopalso still comeswith Office apps pinnedtothe Taskbar,in boxyouwere wondering.
Performance seems mostthe sameas before, quitebecausewewere doing final year’s Surface RT,which still shipswith the Tegra 3 SoC. Browsingand loading tabsin IE11 feels poignantbutthen again, IE11wassupposedtobe the parasitefasterthan IE10. Overall, navigatingthe OScan still feel somewhat sluggish, butthe set upwe attemptedisatleast stable.Otherthanthat,it lookslikewe’llhaveto wait forforsomenew ARM chips prior towecan revisit openingin Windows RT. Untilthen, do not designusto write an additional 4,000 differenceonthe subject.
